FLYING FISH

 

This famous two-masted schooner was designed by the renowned shipbuilder Jeremiah Burnham. The ‘FLYING FISH’ was launched in 1860 in Essex, Massachusetts. For many years Flying Fish was one of the famous and best examples of the types ‘Market Schooner’ of those days. The FLYING FISH was one of the latest ships afloat and brought its cargo and catches fish in the famous bank of America Atlantic ocean coast.

 

The races in which the Flying Fish took part must have been very exiting, as they were first of all described by KIPLING and later featured in the film ‘Captain Courageous’. The FLYING FISH and the fishermen of Gloucester have not been banished to an obscure past. To this day the schooner remains a very popular model which is frequently built.
